Wits Chess Club

The Wits Chess Club is open to all Wits staff, students and alumni.

The WCC competes in the 1st Division of the Gauteng Chess League (2nd highest division), following promotion from the 2nd Division in 2010. Wits competes in the annual USSA (University Sports South Africa) National Championships which, this year 2015, will be held at Mafikeng University ,So whether you’re a beginner who has just learnt to play chess, or a seasoned veteran, you are welcome to drop in our practice sessions and test your skills against our best. Evasan Chettiar and Seadimo Tlale were selected last year to represent SA at the 13th World University Championships (WUC) chess tournament in Katowice, Poland, which happened on 24 August 2014. The championships was part of the sporting events of the International University Sports Federation, organised every year between the Summer and Winter Vac. Evasan and Seadimo were the nominees for the Sports man and Woman of the year in 2014 and they were both awarded with the Full Blue certificates during the Wits Sports Awards that happened last year.

The Wits Chess Club has increased its number of active numbers and the Wits national team has improved tremendously. The Wits men’s and women teams are looking forward to playing in Mafikeng from the 1st to the 5th December 2015 at the USSA Championship. Two of the club members have played at the FISU international games in 2014 and half of the international team consisted of Wits Chess club players. Through playing in the World University Championships and finishing in the 13th place in the World. The Wits Chess players obtained full FISU colours. The Chess Club hopes to encourage and nurture the talent in its members so that participation in the international team in 2015 becomes a reality.

The Wits Chess Club won the USSA Championships for three years in succession since its inception and in 2014 they came up in 2nd position.
